The readers of Friluftsliv are ordinary people who are interested in the outdoors. For ten years I’ve written for them and tried to keep them and their needs in mind in  a business that sometimes are swept away in small technical questions and innovations that are merely nice to have. They keep my feet on the ground and my perspective a little bit different.

DEVOLD OF NORWAY Tusna Sport Air

DEVOLD OF NORWAY

Tusna Sport Air

DESIGN: Camilla Pihl Raugland/Devold of Norway

CATEGORY: APPAREL

MOTIVATION FROM THE JURY

»Once you put them on, you forget you are wearing them. Is there a bigger compliment for garments«, one tester raves about the women’s merino underwear Tusna Sport Air from the Norwegian brand Devold. The key to the outstanding performance is the mix of different merino fabrics. Devold combines merino-mesh and classical knitted underwear fabrics with a new 3D rib material that allows moisture evaporate quickly. This improves comfort because the air pockets in the 3D construction regulate the body heat better than conventional merino fabrics and shorten the drying time. Depending on whether the rips are facing towards the body (more insulation) or are on the outside (less insulation) you can adapt the underwear to the amount of warmth needed. Due to the high stretch of the garment and the perfect patterning, the fit is great and makes you look even better. An outstanding product for all kind of activities and for every temperature excluding warm summer days.

PRIMARY INNOVATION FEATURES

A reversible performance base layer in merino wool. The reversible function gives it the option of two different levels of insulation - simply turn sides to adapt to your performance level or when the weather temperature shifts.

INTENDED SPECIFIC END USE

All-in-one merino base layer which eliminates the need for extra clothing, reducing weight for demanding trips. The reversible function makes it perfect for any adventure.

SPECIFIC FEATURES

The 3D fabric knit makes it reversible to adapt to different intensity levels and changing outdoor temperatures. A flat surface next to the skin gives it high breathability and the wide merino wool waistband provides it with a comfortable fit as well as perfect shape.

SUSTAINABILITY INFORMATION

Made from 99% renewable and biodegradable fibers. Naturally anti-bacterial fibers make it possible to reduce number of washings.

ACLIMA Fleecewool Hoodie & Joggers

ACLIMA

Fleecewool Hoodie & Joggers

DESIGN: Aclima

CATEGORY: APPAREL

MOTIVATION FROM THE JURY

Will this be the Norwegian sweater of the 21st century? Building on old Norwegian heritage, this hoodie/jogger set defies most of the jurors’ conceptions. An awkward entry for an outdoor award that, once worn, was very hard to take off again because its merino fleece made from non-mulesing wool is so soft and cozy that you might want to live in it. It also regulates body temperature amazingly well. For couch potatoing, mountain hut fireplace dwelling, everyday hanging around during the colder season or as a warm technical midlayer on any serious outing – this is a piece that fits anywhere! The jury experienced the true functionality during the testing in rough weather. Replacing both chemical-burdened cotton pieces and microplastic-shedding synthetics, it has created a category of its own where urban casual goes serious mountaineering in a completely new way. »Sometimes the sustainable revolutions come hidden, silent and from unexpected places«, one jury member says.

PRIMARY INNOVATION FEATURES

The FleeceWool hoodie and joggers are made in Aclimas newly developed 100% merino wool fabric named FleeceWool. It’s super soft, lightweight and very comfy to wear.

INTENDED SPECIFIC END USE

The concept is relaxed sporty garments which can be worn in all sorts of settings where you need a comfortable and isolating garment. The fabric is made from 100% merino wool - even the cord.

SPECIFIC FEATURES

FleeceWool is made of 100% merino wool. The fabric on the inside is made of 17,5 micron yarn. After knitting the it’s cut and brushed, which makes the fabric soft, insulating and very comfortable to wear.

SUSTAINABILITY INFORMATION

Aclima is trying to optimize the wool usage because of its benefits when weather changes and since it’s biodegradable. Aclima is currently working on a plan to collect garments in shops or having garments sent back to them. They will re-use the materials as fillings in punching balls!

What’s your main contribution of being in the Jury do you think
I come with seven years of experience testing all kinds of outdoor gear for print and digital publications but I’d say my main expertise lies in equipment for hiking and backpacking. Over the last decade I’ve completed a number of long solo treks, including the Cambrian Way, the 1000-mile path around Wales, the Alta Via 2 through the Dolomites and a coast to coast of Scotland. At the moment, I’m pretty fixated on ultralight stuff as I’m fine tuning my fast packing kit list for an attempt to run end-to-end of Wales via all of its mountains over 600-metres.

Favorite outdoor activities:
Multli-day trips with tent (backpacking) during all for seasons, day-hikes on and off trail through out the gear – and all the time testing gear while being out.

What’s your main contribution of being in the Jury do you think?
I have more than 25 years of experience in testing and comparing outdoor gear, within in industry I am known to be one of the best testers worldwide – and although I am gear freak I understand the needs of “normal” hikers and backpackers.
