Combining knitted Merino fabric and Merino mesh has been around for a while but it has never been executed as well as in the apparel winner of this year. The strategic placement of the materials in this piece is thought through and works well, where the mesh is placed under the arms and only partly on the back. This makes the design of this t-shirt very appealing. Also, Aclima has always been among the pioneers of this material combination.

Aclima Sports T-shirt is designed in a new thin mesh construction in 100% Merino wool. The mesh is lightweight and the construction is made for optimal ventilation. A perfect garment for summer use or as base layer on chilly days.

MOTIVATION FROM THE JURY

»Once you put them on, you forget you are wearing them. Is there a bigger compliment for garments«, one tester raves about the women’s merino underwear Tusna Sport Air from the Norwegian brand Devold. The key to the outstanding performance is the mix of different merino fabrics. Devold combines merino-mesh and classical knitted underwear fabrics with a new 3D rib material that allows moisture evaporate quickly. This improves comfort because the air pockets in the 3D construction regulate the body heat better than conventional merino fabrics and shorten the drying time. Depending on whether the rips are facing towards the body (more insulation) or are on the outside (less insulation) you can adapt the underwear to the amount of warmth needed. Due to the high stretch of the garment and the perfect patterning, the fit is great and makes you look even better. An outstanding product for all kind of activities and for every temperature excluding warm summer days.

By using the waste from Woolpower, the material is up-cycled and is given a second lifecycle. The insole is also made with this recycled wool from Woolpower together with Bloom foam to offer great cushioning and warmth.

SPECIFIC FEATURES

Rabot 365 pant is a pair of softshell pants made from recycled polyamide. The smartness lies in the reinforcements in the seat area and on the knees. They have waterproof Cordura on the outside and insulating merino wool on the inside, which is just perfect when sitting on cold and wet surfaces. The waist is adjustable thanks to velcro. The pants are equipped with RECCO®.

SUSTAINABILITY INFORMATION

Made in a recycled polyamide fabric and all fabrics are bluesign® approved. The pants have a PFAS-free DWR finishing. Bergans only use merino wool certified for non-mulesing by the Australian Wool Testing Authority.

MOTIVATION FROM THE JURY

Will this be the Norwegian sweater of the 21st century? Building on old Norwegian heritage, this hoodie/jogger set defies most of the jurors’ conceptions. An awkward entry for an outdoor award that, once worn, was very hard to take off again because its merino fleece made from non-mulesing wool is so soft and cozy that you might want to live in it. It also regulates body temperature amazingly well. For couch potatoing, mountain hut fireplace dwelling, everyday hanging around during the colder season or as a warm technical midlayer on any serious outing – this is a piece that fits anywhere! The jury experienced the true functionality during the testing in rough weather. Replacing both chemical-burdened cotton pieces and microplastic-shedding synthetics, it has created a category of its own where urban casual goes serious mountaineering in a completely new way. »Sometimes the sustainable revolutions come hidden, silent and from unexpected places«, one jury member says.

PRIMARY INNOVATION FEATURES

The FleeceWool hoodie and joggers are made in Aclimas newly developed 100% merino wool fabric named FleeceWool. It’s super soft, lightweight and very comfy to wear.

INTENDED SPECIFIC END USE

The concept is relaxed sporty garments which can be worn in all sorts of settings where you need a comfortable and isolating garment. The fabric is made from 100% merino wool - even the cord.

SPECIFIC FEATURES

FleeceWool is made of 100% merino wool. The fabric on the inside is made of 17,5 micron yarn. After knitting the it’s cut and brushed, which makes the fabric soft, insulating and very comfortable to wear.

It is not classical outdoor footwear but the jury liked the ecological approach that Tretorn has chosen for the Racket Eco Sneaker. This classic styled lifestyle sneaker is made from recycled fabric that can be recycled again and the outsole compound includes 60 percent of natural rubber. Additionally the eco leather used can be traced back to the farm. Björn Borg would be proud!

PRIMARY INNOVATION FEATURES

Tretorn managed to change a classic sneaker into a unique Eco sneaker without making a notable change for the passing eye. An everyday sneaker but still good for the environment.

INTENDED SPECIFIC END USE

The Racket Eco Sneaker is designed for everyone. Perfect for active people who loves leisure wear but with a twist.

SPECIFIC FEATURES

Tretorn changed the outsole compound to include 60% natural rubber sourced from local farms in Vietnam, making the oil and plastic dependency low in comparison to most footwear outsoles today. They work with TanTec Eco Tannery for a water and chemical reduced Eco Suede traceable back to the farm with full transparency. Tretorn changed the construction of the insock to be build on a compound from recycled rubber, making the construction free from PU and plastics.

SUSTAINABILITY INFORMATION

Tretorn never uses fluorocarbons, phthalates, PVC. They only use chemicals when needed and only in a very restricted and controlled way. Tretorn has developed their own fabric Ocean Shell that is recycled and recyclable. On sneakers they do not have a solution in place for how they can be taken care of as it is today. They are a mix of so many compounds making it hard with present situation. However hopefully they have soon managed to make sneakers in less compounds and then made them easier for recycling or reuse.

Water repellency plays an important role for outdoor garments. Organotex Textile waterproofing is an ecological friendly, PFC-free and fully biodegradable way of keeping your clothing highly water repellent. The jury also liked that it will perform well without having to apply heat to the treated garment when you let it dry for two days. The products are manufactured in Sweden.

PRIMARY INNOVATION FEATURES

By mimicking the lotus leaf, OrganoTex have designed a waterborne system that builds up a breathable 3D network with micro and macroscopic surface roughness covered by a layer of anchored fatty compounds for good coverage and durability of the treatment on the textile.

INTENDED SPECIFIC END USE

OrganoTex end-consumer product is aimed to re-impregnate or impregnate variations of textile fabrics to become water repellent. The product is workable also for all kinds of laminated or coated fabrics and will not affect the breathability.

SPECIFIC FEATURES

The 3D network technology creates water repellence, maintains the fabric’s breathability and softness compared to film forming technology, such as for example PU and wax-based products. The product is 100% readily biodegradable and classified as non-toxic according to CLP. Water-based emulsion with readily biodegradable fatty hydrocarbons.

PRIMARY INNOVATION FEATURES

Åby Forest Axe is a new axe designed to be able to fulfill various tasks required on an expedition. A beautiful hybrid axe for many types of use, such as felling, carving and splitting. Åby has a straighter edge and grinding, and a good finger notch below the head for increased precision.

There might be other floating knives on the market but none comes close to the performance of the Floating Rope Knife from Swedish manufacturer Morakniv. The jury was impressed of the overall design including a handle made out of cork which is soft and grippy at the same time. Also the serrated blade works well, the rounded tip makes handling a lot more secure. The super light weight makes it not only a great knife for kayaking or boating but also for hiking and backpacking. »The more we tested the Morakniv the more we loved it«, says one jury member.

PRIMARY INNOVATION FEATURES

The Morakniv Floating Rope Knife is a fixed blade knife that, thanks to the designed handle of cork, actually floats in water. The thin serrated blade of stainless steel is specially designed to handle the cutting of rope, fibre and nylon.

INTENDED SPECIFIC END USE

Morakniv developed the Floating Rope Knife for the offshore industry where a floating knife is of high importance. Especially in the fish farm agriculture where knives are used regularly for cutting rope or as a general tool. Of course its features also make this knife a perfect tool for kayakers, people sailing and others spending time on the water, both professionals and sportsmen.

The shaped fit of the trousers with a gusset and back yoke is especially developed for enhanced freedom of movement and comfort. With articulated knees and ability to tighten the ankles they are perfect for high activity.

The Herøy Pant is made from a fabric that consists of 58% merino wool fibres. One of the natural benefits from the merino wool is the permanent natural resistance to microbial growth and odour retention. This plant based treatment is hypoallergenic and Ökotex-approved. »We also liked that the design is appealing to the eye and that the price is consumer friendly«, as noted by one jury member.

Mosquitoes can infect people with serious illnesses. In a mosquito-rich environment, this jacket used with pants made from the same material will cover up most of the skin, leaving less skin to be covered with mosquito repellent lotion. It is nature-friendly and will not harm the mosquitoes or any other insects. The fabric is treated with a mosquito-repellent finish. The active substance therein is a plant extract called geraniol, which comes from the Palmarosa plant. In the finish, geraniol is skin-friendly and non-toxic, safely protecting kids without dangerous chemicals. The finish is a product of the French company Breyner. It is tested to be hypoallergenic and it is Oeko-Tex® approved for all classes.
