NordShield: BioLayr

NORDSHIELD

BioLayr

INNOVATION AWARD FW 25/26

Statement from the jury:
The standard way to create odor free fabrics is to apply silver particles that reduce the amount of bacteria that start to smell. Learning from trees, the Finnish brand NordShield developed a new technology: BioLayr. Coating each fiber with the biocide-free BioLayr, bacteria cannot even be built up within the fabric – which works great: During testing jury members wore shirts for a few days in a row without getting smelly. This new technology has already also been used in apparel made for the health business to reduce the amount of viruses and bacteria in hospitals etc. This could be a game-changer, not only for outdoor apparel.

Product USP

Nordshield Bio Layr is officially recognized as the world's first non-biocidal antimicrobial and anti-odor technology. A biocide-free technology that breaths sustainable longevity and cleanliness into your textiles.

Primary innovation features:

The biocide-free NordShield BioLayr® formulation creates an ultrathin coating on the surface of fibers that physically denies microorganisms and viruses when applied to textiles from water-based solutions. The technology provides an unique dual function:

  • Physical Antimicrobial: Reduces both fabric deterioration and bacterial odor formation
  • Odor Capture: Eliminates bad odors NordShield BioLayr® sets a new standard with a seamless, self-cleaning barrier that blocks microbes, captures odors, and keeps textiles hygienic, free from biocidal chemicals.

It utilizes the power of wood extractives, nature’s ancient power for protection. The unique innovation of plant-based surface technology is based on the anchoring and orientation of resin acids on the surface of the fibers.

Intended specific end use:

Textiles, fabrics and footwear.

Fun facts or backstory:

Ever wonder why trees grow so old? We did and used biomimicry to develop NordShield.

TRUE SCANDINAVIA AWARD FW 25/26

Statement from the jury
For Scandinavians, being outside is not just an activity, it is part of their lifestyle and heritage. Family-owned businesses focusing on highly functional outdoor apparel and equipment were born out of this. The WarmWool Motion Roll Neck from the Norwegian brand Aclima is a great example for this true Scandinavian mindset since it is more than just another top made from merino wool. Thanks to its jacquard knitted, super stretchy and cozy fabric it hugs the body like a second skin, allowing you to move freely. Product USP

A wool shirt with a high collar in 100% merino wool. Carefully selected colour combinations to support and inspire an active and dynamic lifestyle. Motion is a pattern inspired by dynamic shapes and lines found in nature, like snowdrifts formed by the wind or annual rings in a tree trunk.

Primary innovation features:

Aclima has developed a slim fit wool shirt with a high collar that is suitable as base layer on cold days. The WarmWool fabric is jacquard knitted, making it elastic and warm. The garment also has an extended back panel for extra coverage and flatlock seams to prevent chafing and enhance the comfort. (19.5 µm).

Intended specific end use:

And because of its soft feel it can be worn directly on the skin or layered up with for instance our WoolNet Original Crewneck, for a more versatile solution.

Fun facts or backstory:

Since the fabric is utilized as efficiently as possible during cutting in Aclima’s production, the Motion pattern will vary from garment to garment, making every WarmWool Motion product unique. Primary innovation features:

Aclima has created a versatile t-shirt for all activities. Designed with the user in mind, it features seamless underarm construction for ultimate comfort. Combining overlock and flatlock seams to enhance durability, fit and comfort.

Made from 100% soft, light merino wool (17.3 microns), this garment is perfect for high, medium, and low activity levels, as well as everyday wear. It’s a versatile piece where functionality meets comfort.

Intended specific end use:

Introducing the ultimate all-in-one t-shirt, seamlessly transitioning from work to outdoor adventures. Perfect for hiking, trail running, cycling, or just enjoying nature right after work without the need to change.

End of use strategy:

This is already something that Aclima does with fabric cut-offs from our production waste, within our ReBorn concept. Aclimas Italian partners who process the wool waste are also experts in sorting and processing used wool garments.
In the future, Aclima sees great potential in projects of collecting used-up wool garments and recycling the fabrics to make new material and products. Especially in Europe, thanks to EU’s new legislations that are in line with the Green Deal and Textile Sustainability Strategy.

Aclima supplies clothing to soldiers from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland featuring our WoolNet and LightWool products, under the Nordic Combat Uniform (NCU) agreement.

HELLE: Nying

HELLE

Nying

Product USP

The essence of Scandinavian knifemaking: Functional, Beautiful and Parsimonious. Made for the outdoors and with proved ability to last for generations.

Primary innovation features:

When introduced in 1975, The Nying changed how Scandinavians thought about all-purpose knives. The designer Tor Indergaard looked at how most people would use their longer "tollekniv" at the time, and found that most people only used the inner third of the blade. To save material, gain better control, and improve usability, Indergaard halved the blade length and made the handle shorter and stouter. For materials, Helle chose its patented triple laminate stainless (H3LS) steel for the blade and curly birch for the handle. Both laminate steels and curly birch were common in custom knives at the time, but not associated with production knives. The result of these processes was a design classic. Since its inception, the Nying has been among Helle's best-selling model every year. Even 50 years later the Nying is noted for its peculiar and functional shape. The model today is based on the same design and material as it was 50 years ago, yet it still stands out in both Helle's catalogue of models and the outdoor knife world in general.

Intended specific end use:

An all-purpose Scandinavian Outdoor knife. Excels at woodwork, but functions well for anything you need a knife for when being Outdoor in Scandinavia. With a sheath that you can wrap around the end of your knife, the knife will be securely fastened on your belt for any walk in the forest or hike in the mountains.

Fun facts or backstory:

When it was 25 years, the Nying won the Classic Design award from the Norwegian Design Centre in 2000.
"Nying" - means "new one" in Norwegian, a pointer to it being something very new and innovative when it was launched.

Fun facts or backstory:

Reisa Go draws its spirit from a beloved classic -The Nordisk Reisa (4 and 6, respectively), a perennial favorite especially in Japan, where it has been embraced not just as a shelter but as a canvas for creativity. The high ceilings and spacious interiors of the old Reisa, have allowed Japanese campers to transform their tents into elaborate living rooms. Furnishing them with an array of decorative items and furniture, even for brief excursions, they turn camping into an art form of home-making in the wild.

Observing this unique use—where typically only one sleeping cabin is utilized, footprints often remain untouched, and additional tarps are almost invariably added— inspired Nordisk to innovate beyond the conventional tent bundle. Reisa Go is a response to the culture of customization, allowing every camper to craft their perfect setup from the ground up. By rethinking how tents are packaged and sold, we’re empowering users to make sustainable choices, buying only what they need, reducing waste, and enhancing their engagement with nature.

Favourite outdoor activities:
Hiking and climbing mountains around the world and basically all winter sports, especially nordic skating and all kinds of skiing

What’s your main contribution of being in the Jury do you think?
I started testing outdoor equipment during my project European Peaks which I brought me to the highest peak of every European country between 2018 and 2019 so I will be looking at the products how they can handle tough mountain conditions. For me, it’s important to find balance between light weight and durable material.

Title: Senior Communication Manager Country: Germany

Favorite outdoor activities:
Snowboarding, Mountainbiking/Downhill, hiking, general outdoor sports, running and fitness, climbing

What’s your main contribution of being in the Jury do you think?
I have been deeply rooted in the outdoor- and fashionindustry for over 15 years. After studying at ESMOD in Munich, I built a reputation as a freelance journalist specializing in sports, lifestyle and fashion, following my most recent role as editor-in-chief of the B2B magazine SAZsport. Perhaps that’s why I’ve had the opportunity to contribute my expertise as a jury member for the ISPO Awards, as well as a member of the “she is outdoors” Awards and the SAZsport Newcomer Awards Startrampe. The field of performance and sportswear has always been my primary interest. Whether it’s fabrics and their composition, exciting new technical solutions, innovative design approaches, or developments in insulation and membranes, it’s a passion that ultimately led me to support the sustainable sourcing fair for functional fabrics & accessories PERFORMANCE DAYS in my new role as communications manager. I’ve always sought balance from everyday life in the mountains—preferably through mountain biking, hiking, or snowboarding. Having appropriate equipment and clothing by my side is essential. Primarily, my focus is on defining the utility of a product and then, of course, in a second step, whether it offers a benefit for the active athlete. In the future, it’s crucial for brands to constantly question whether introducing a new product to the market is worthwhile—considering factors like production methods, location, and the ability to fully recycle garments back into the cycle.

Favorite outdoor activities:
Thru-Hiking, mountaineering, trekking, trail running, ski touring and experiencing outdoors with my dog Ralfi and my friends. Since 2020 mostly traveling Europe with my camper van to find new places and stories.

What’s your main contribution of being in the Jury do you think?
My heart belongs to the outdoors. Over the past 20 years I have traveled the world and experienced several continents mainly through my activities in nature. Trekking is one of my biggest passions as it gives me the most profound feeling of freedom. I’m super happy to share my experiences and knowledge with a broad audience through my publications. On my (research) trips I always have equipment with me for testing purposes. Currently, I’m writing a book about my alp cross that I did with my dog Ralfi in 2023. Also for this year we have planned a big trip – this time we are trekking with tent. What I value the most about gear is versatility and durability. When I’m in the outdoors I want to trust my equipment 100 percent and try to make use of most of it for different purposes. Rating and recommending products that I have thoroughly tested is just what helps other people to have wonderful experiences in the outdoors. That’s why I’m super happy to be part of the jury fall/winter 2024.

Favorite outdoor activities:
By far my greatest passion is mountain trail runnig, long slow distances, not to win any race, but rather as explorative journeys with a mix of running and mindfulness – Trailfulness. That is also the focus of the Explorers Running Club. However, I just love to be outdoors and I always have a lot of activities as ongoing projects and trips, it’s a lot of hiking, climbing, back country skiing and ski touring. Probably the usual mix of adrenalin and connecting with nature.

What’s your main contribution of being in the Jury do you think?
My main contribution is probably the deep knowledge I have in outdoor consumer behavior, outdoor trends and lifestyle context, linked to branding, products and sustainability, but also how this could merge into more of a lifestyle usage and place the products in a wider context, that is increasingly important for outdoor brands today when entering new markets or addressing new consumer groups.

What’s your main contribution of being in the Jury do you think?
My world is Outdoor sports and the textile industry. I grew up in the Black Forest and was a youth pro athlete in ski racing and tennis. After my studies in fashion design and tailoring in Paris, I went back to Germany and founded my agency in Munich for sports design over 20 years ago. I was blessed to design many great Mountain-, Water- and Performance Sports collections. For many years I guided the „ISPO Award“ Jury in Apparel and was Head judge for the „She is Outdoors“ Award. For 14 years I have curated the functional „Fabric Forum“ at „Performance Days“ – Functional Fabric Fair. Any new fabric development goes through my hands.
My main contribution will be to advise if the products are well thought and developed in all their details for the respective purpose and end consumer. I can also contribute the know-how about the purposeful fabrics and trims use in the garments.

What’s your main contribution of being in the Jury do you think?
We launched our print-magazine in 2020 and I’ve been the editor-in-chief for the first 4 issues and gear editor for the past 3 years. Together with our team we are developing campaigns and content that connects brands and the female outdoor community. We are part of this female community and have listened to their feedback, needs and wishes for outdoor equipment. On a personal level, it was hiking a long section of the Pacific Crest Trail in 2022 that gave me a whole new perspective on ultralight-gear, essentials and comfort on trail and being in total wilderness. I became been even more obsessed with materials, functionality and durability and am always looking for gear and clothing that fits our values: it should be sustainable, high performing and made for all bodies and sizes outdoors.

What’s your main contribution of being in the Jury do you think?
During the years within the outdoor business, I have had the honor to test a lot of gear and clothes – but as an adventurer (with focus on long-distance) I also know what will work in the long term and what is just a fancy detail. Functionality, sustainability and innovation is what I look for (fancy details on top of that is off course a bonus!). And as a mountain leader I can also tell what products that are beneficial for people that don’t spend as much time in nature as I do. So “user friendliness” is also a feature that I will look for in the products we test.
